Royce, Premier and Marc Hannibal Forever

Image
Back in the 1997 when Eminem was first introduced to Royce da 5'9 Slim Shady decided this was a lyricist with who he could make some serious Hip-Hop and he was right.  He went onto work with Eminem on The Slim Shady LP but what most hardcore hip hop fans were waiting for was Royce to step to the mic on his own.  We heard him on the Grand Theft Auto III soundtrack on the track "I'm the King" which was produced by The Alchemist and it was a dope track.  A nice beat which allowed Royce to show off his skills.  However its impact was small when you compare it to his next single "Boom".  This 12" was released in 2000 and was destined to be a big club banger.  DJ Premier produced it and he did a superb job.  The track starts off with a clock ticking and then jumps into a fantastic strings sample before being joined by some signature Premier drums.  Royce kills it lyrically just check out this first verse I'm the verbal-spit Smith Wesson I unload ...

Cypress Hill have their Hand on the Pump with Gene and Junior Walker

Image
I first heard of Cypress Hill when I saw the video for Phuncky Feel One on MTV Raps back in August 1991.  At the time you could only get MTV on Sky or Cable in the UK and although my family did not have it I would carry my video recorder the three miles to a friends house every week to record videos off MTV.  Up until that point I had never seen a Hip Hop video unless by some chance it had made it onto BBC's Top of the Pops or ITV's The Chart Show but these outlets were only for the mainstream Hip Hop acts or occasionally De La Soul or even PE.  When I saw the video for Phuncky Feel One I was struck by how diffeent and fresh this sound was.  the video was weird as hell but it really caught my attention.  I never managed to get the 12" but I certainly got the subsequent 12"s from that album.  The first of which was Hand on the Pump. Hand on the Pump is a song that immediately grabs your attention by using a vocal sample chopped expertly by DJ Muggs befo...

Camp Lo's Adventures in the Land of Music

Image
The Summer of 1996 was a special time for me; I had just become a father for the first time, I was living away from my family and a new job had given more money to spend on music than I had ever had before. One of the biggest tunes I bought that Summer was Camp Lo's Luchini. It was so different to everything out at the time, a hyped up fun summer track where the emcees didnt take themselves too seriously. I picked this 12" up from Deal Real in London's West End which was where I was getting most of my music at that time. The 12" had Luchini on the A-Side and Swing on the B. Both tracks were produced by Ski as was all of the album, Uptown Saturday Night. Theres a radio edit, instrumental and a capella of Luchini and radio edit of Swing and and instrumental too. For the next section I have to say thanks to Mr Thing for putting me onto the break for Luchini. The break is taken from a track called Adventures in the land of Music taken form the 1980 album of the ...

The many styles of Criminology

Image
Following the two leaked joints form the upcoming Method Man, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah album, Wu-Massacre I was already looking forward to what seemed like a return to form for the three Wu heavy weights and now to top it off they have leaked Criminology 2.5 from the new album. Obviously the first version of Criminiology was first released on the double A-Side 12" back in 1995 with Glaciers of Ice on the flip. This was the first 12" from the legendary Only Built for Cuban Linx. Upon hearing that 12" I began hunting for the break that Rza had flipped so magnificently and you can read about that here , it was of course the fantastic 'Why Marry' by The Sweet Inspirations. But Criminology became more than that with Raekwon performing it with the amazing jazz band the El Michaels Affair and then later making a Criminology Part 2. Criminology part 2 was supposed to be included on Only Built for Cuban Linx part 2 which of course dropped last year to very strong...

10 Valentines Breakz

Image
As its Valentines Day this weekend I'm upping a special compilations of Valentines themed Breakz, so hook up with that special person to these soulful breakz. Joe Simon - Drowning in the Sea of Love This track is taken from the 1972 album of the same name and was sampled by the great DJ Premier for the lead single form the Moment of Truth album, You Know my Steez. Premier flips the guitar lick adds a Method Man sample and you have an underrated lead single from an underrated album. Minnie Riperton-Inside my love This here was one of the first breakz I ever bought on vinyl and it is taken from the 1975 album Adventures in Paradise. This song highlights the magnificent talent of Minnie and was used by A Tribe Called Quest on the phenomenal Lyrics to Go from what was probably their best album Midnight marauders. Bobby Caldwell - Open your eyes A fantastic song here form one of the best Blue Eyed Soul Artists of the eighties certainly up there with Hall and Oates. This track is tak...

The Re Up:Mobb Deep and Claudja Barry

Image
Because I have had a number of people asking for the Re Up on this post here it is again, with the download of course. Back in about 1999 I picked up a Bootleg Mobb Deep 12" from London's now closed down Mr Bongos. I've always been partial to a nice bit of Havoc and Prodigy especially if its Havoc behind the boards. I like the dark ominous production style that Havoc fathered and their style of morbidly threatening raps has always cheered me up. At the time I had only heard 3 the Hard way and Gun Love on a couple of mixtapes and had liked what I heard despite the wack DJ shouting all over the tracks. So of course being a big QB fan I had to grab this bootleg 12" The track Gun Love is about a love affair and how it lasts through the various ages of Prodigy's life and how much this love means to him. I know what your thinking this doesn't sound like the usual Mobb Deep subject matter but the love that he's talking about is as the title indicates his G...

Teddy closes the door for the last time

Image
I awoke this morning to the news that yet another Soul legend had passed away, Teddy Pendergrass. Teddy's career began when he was a drummer for The Cadillacs, which later merged with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Melvin asked Teddy to become the lead singer. Months later the group signed with Gamble & Huff on the then-CBS subsidiary Philadelphia International Records in 1972. The Blue Notes had hits such as "I Miss You," "Bad Luck," "Wake Up Everybody," the two million seller "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and many more. Following personality conflicts between Melvin and Pendergrass, Pendergrass launched a solo career and released hit singles like "The More I Get the More I Want," "Close the Door," "I Don't Love You Anymore," "Turn Off the Lights" and others. His first solo album was self titled Teddy Pendergrass (1977), followed by Life is a Song Worth Singing (1978), Live Coast to C...

My Top 10 Reggae Breakz

Image
As I haven't done a breakz post in a while and I've been listening to a lot of Reggae recently I thought I'd compile my top 10 Reggae Breakz. I'm not saying these are the most sampled Reggae Breakz or even the best but these are my favourite Reggae Breakz; 1 - Yellowman - Zungguzungguguzungguzeng Classic Yellowman track from the album of the same name best utilised for Boogie Down Productions "P is Free" this was released in 1983 on the Shanachie label. 2 - Brentford All-Stars - Greedy G Fantastic up beat Reggae / Ska tune used by BDP, Eric B and Rakim, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and Ghostface amongst others. This was an early 1970s release by Studio 1's house band and apparently based on James Brown's Get on the Good Foot. 3 - Dave & Ansel Collins - Double Barrell I am the Magnificent... this was taken form the 1971 album of the same name and was most notably used for the famous vocal sample at the start of the track by too many people...

Diamond, Cru and David Axelrod on a Hiatus

Image
In the early nineties Diamond D released one of the best albums of the decade, Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop. The album featured Diamond behind the boards with co production from Large Pro, Showbiz, Buckwild, Lakim Shabazz, Jazzy Jay, The 45 King and Q-Tip. Diamond was also on the mic alongside some of his D.I.T.C. friends including Big L, Fat Joe, Lord Finesse as well members of Brand Nubian. The album was incredible and featured amazing use of samples and loops from varying sources and genres. But then there was nothing heard from Diamond as an artist for a number of years although he kept his name in the game by doing production work for a number of artists including OC and House of Pain. Then in 1997 Diamond D dropped his sophomore album, Hatred Passion and infidelity on Mercury. It was a strong album with good production although not as groundbreaking as his first it did feature additional production from Buckwild. The album featured a number of guests including; Pete Rock, Ph...

They represent CA and NY and have hooked up this dope little mix that I'm bumpin' as I write this and its a real nice mix. Nine and The Spinners will be around

Image
"I'll Be Around" was record by The Spinners (known as "Detroit Spinners" in the UK) in 1972. The song was co-written by the legendary Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt and produced by Bell. The production of the song gives it a smooth, mid-tempo feel, with guitar at the forefront and punctuation from female background singers, horns, strings and congo-playing from Larry Washington. Bobbie Smith handles lead vocals on the song. The song was included on the group's 1972 self-titled album on Atlantic Records, their first album release for the label. It was initially released as the B-side of the group's first single on Atlantic, with "How Could I Let You Get Away" being the A-side. Radio deejays, however, soon opted for "I'll Be Around" which led to Atlantic flipping the single over and the song became an unexpected hit, eventually spending five weeks at number one on the U.S. R&B chart (the group's first number-one on the R&B ch...
